  • Townsel receives second NEH grant

Melody Townsel, Social Studies Teacher at the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts has been selected to attend a five-week seminar on “Existentialism” to be held at Mount Holyoke College this summer in South Hadley, Massachusetts. The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) allows teachers to apply for two programs, then requires the teacher to select a program if selected as a participant for both. Ms. Townsel was one of 15 teachers selected nationwide for both programs: one on “Communism in America” to be held at Emory University and the other on “Existentialism” at Mt. Holyoke. The program will be directed by Thomas E. Wartenberg, Director of the Department of Philosophy at Mount Holyoke. Ms. Townsel previously was selected to attend an NEH-funded Teacher Institute at the University of Pittsburgh in 2015 designed to help teachers use music as a primary source to teach US History. She is a sixth year teacher in DISD and a designated DISD distinguished teacher. ...................................................................
