Representing District 3, Leigh Ann Ellis was elected to the Board of Trustees in May 2006. She has been involved with education issues and the Dallas ISD for many years.
Ellis’ involvement with education includes membership in the board of directors of Head Start of Greater Dallas from 1991 to 1995 and the site-based management groups at Victor H. Hexter Elementary School, Robert T. Hill Middle School, and Bryan Adams High School. She received the Lifetime PTA Award from the Bryan Adams High School PTA. Ellis also has served as chair of the Dallas ISD Superintendent’s Community Advisory Committee and is past chair of the Education Committee of the Dallas Northeast Chamber of Commerce. She is a member of the Women’s Council of Dallas County and the Peninsula Homeowner’s Association.
Ellis, owner of Ghost Dance, has been a residential landscape designer since 1985. She was a contract seasonal color designer during the early development of the Dallas Arboretum. She earned a master’s degree in urban affairs from The University of Texas at Arlington, a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from Texas A&M University, and an associate degree in landscape design/horticulture from Richland College.
Ellis earned scholarships and worked part-time while earning her degrees. She received outstanding student awards two years in a row at Texas A&M and was awarded an internship at the Dallas Arboretum.
Ellis is a strong supporter of the Horticulture Department at Richland College, where she has taught credit and non-credit classes. She worked extensively in refugee resettlement and with local resettlement agencies in the Vietnamese, Cambodia, Laotian, Cuban, Sudanese, Ethiopian, Eritrean, and Somali communities in Dallas. Ellis also worked part time as project coordinator for Just for the Kids in Austin.
Ellis’ daughter, Cheyenne, is a 2005 graduate of Bryan Adams High School.
