Representing District 1, Edwin Flores, Ph.D., J.D., was elected to the Board of Trustees in May 2005. Dr. Flores is a managing partner and founder of the Intellectual Property law firm of Chalker Flores LLP, where he focuses his practice on biotechnology patent law. As part of the Lawyer-on-Loan program while an associate at Gardere, Wynne, Sewell LLP, he served as an assistant district attorney in Dallas County. Prior to merging with Gardere, Flores was with the law firm of Warren & Perez.

Born and reared in Mexico City, Mexico, Flores is bilingual and bicultural. After completing high school in Mexico, he earned a bachelor's degree in microbiology from The University of Texas at Austin. At the age of 26, he received a doctoral degree in immunology from Washington University in St. Louis. His doctoral work included the isolation and characterization of immune-specific genes that could reverse the activities of known cancer-causing genes. After working as a scientific advisor with the law firm of Arnold, White & Durkee in Austin, he earned a law degree from The University of Texas School of Law.

He has published numerous scientific and legal publications in peer-reviewed journals. Flores is a member of the Science Place executive committee and is past-chair of the Greater Dallas Chamber BIO2004 committee; Director-at-Large of the Texas Technology Transfer Association; co-chair of the diversity committee of the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers and taught Advanced Physiology at Brookhaven College. He is a frequent speaker on the topics of patent law, intellectual property, biotechnology, nanotechnology, bioethics and technology transfer.

Flores and his wife Jesica (also an attorney) have two children; one attends a Dallas ISD-state recognized school in northwest Dallas and the other is pre-school age.
