Nearly every school in Trustee District 5 is receiving renovations and/or additions. These include historically sensitive renovations and a 168,000-square-foot addition to Booker T. Washington High School, which is a historical landmark.
Representing District 5, Lew Blackburn, Ph.D., was elected to the Board of Trustees in June 2001, and has served as second vice president. Dr. Blackburn has 18 years of experience in education. He began his career as an instrumental music teacher with the Dallas ISD at Albert S. Johnston Elementary School, followed by assignments to N.W. Harllee, Roger Q. Mills and John F. Peeler elementary schools. He later served as an assistant principal at Thomas Edison Middle Learning Center in west Dallas.
Blackburn has worked for the Texas Education Agency in the Division of School Accountability, and has served as a principal in Goodrich, Texas and Duncanville, Texas.
Blackburn was served on the faculty at Texas A&M University-Commerce in the Department of Educational Administration, where he taught graduate courses. He has presented workshops and written papers on parent involvement, student support, collaborative decision-making and communication for educators.
Blackburn was born in Fort Worth, where he attended elementary school. After moving to Dallas, he attended Holmes Junior High School and graduated from Roosevelt High School. Blackburn earned a bachelor's degree in music education, a master's degree in education from Texas A&M University-Commerce, and a doctor of philosophy degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
Blackburn has three children, Lew Jr., Dorsha and Clinton, all of whom are Dallas ISD graduates. He lives in the Cedar Crest neighborhood of Oak Cliff.
