Trustee Biography

Representing District 7, Jerome Garza was elected to the Board of Trustees in May 2004 and currently serves the board as second vice president. A vice president and bank manager with Chase Bank, Garza's swearing in as a trustee continues a family tradition of public service established by his father, Trini Garza, the first Hispanic to serve on the Dallas Independent School District in 1969.

Garza began his education in the Dallas ISD, where he attended Winnetka Elementary, Stevens Park Elementary, and W.E. Greiner Middle School. Continuing his education, he attended St. Mark's School of Texas, and later graduated from Southern Methodist University with a major in business and finance. During his college years, he was very active in student affairs, was recognized in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, and was awarded the prestigious "M" award of SMU.

A small footnote to his college career was his service as a congressional summer intern to U.S. Congressman Edward Roybal of California. While in Washington, Garza worked with a team of interns that created the database for what is known today as NALEO (National Association of Latino Elected Officials).

Garza has continued his civic involvement during his professional years, holding leadership roles in multiple organizations, including Methodist Hospitals of Dallas, Good Will Industries of Dallas, Alzheimer's Association of Dallas, Dallas Family Guidance Center, John Tower Center of Public Policy at Southern Methodist University, and Dallas Area Rapid Transit.

He is also active in the Oak Cliff community as a member of the Oak Cliff Lions Club, Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce, L.U.L.A.C., and also volunteers as a coach with the YMCA. He has also served as a trustee for the Dallas County Community College District and St. Mark's School of Texas, and is an active PTA parent at his children's school.
