The DISD Board of Trustees has chosen names for the 21 new schools, one reconstituted school, and two new district facilities being built with 2002 bond program funds. Below are the names of these schools by Board Trustee district.

DISTRICT 1

  • Jerry Junkins Elementary School (opening 2006)
    2808 Running Duke Dr., Carrollton

    Named for the former chairman, president and CEO of Texas Instruments and supporter of education, especially of early childhood education and the Head Start program.

  • C.A. Tatum Jr. Elementary School (opening 2006)
    3002 St. Augustine Road

    Named for the community leader who contributed to the peaceful desegregation of Dallas schools and public accommodations in the early 1960s.
  • Henry B. Gonzalez Elementary School (opening 2006)
    6610 Lake June Road

    Named for the first Mexican American elected to the Texas Senate (1956), the first to run for governor (1958), and the first to be elected from Texas to the U.S. House of Representatives (1961).

  • Arcadia Park Elementary School (opened 2004)
    1300 N. Justin Ave.
  • Celestino Mauricio Soto Elementary School (opening 2006)
    4510 West Jefferson Blvd.

    Named for the DISD volunteer and advocate for the mentally disabled who served 15 years in the U.S. Navy.
  • Rosemont Primary School-Chris V. Semos Campus, (opened 2005)
    1919 Stevens Forest Dr.

    Named for local restaurant owner and politician who served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives (1967-1983) and as a Dallas County Commissioner (1983-1995).
  • Felix G. Botello Elementary School (opening 2006)
    225 S. Marsalis Ave.

    Named for the World War II hero who lost his sight in the Philippines during a mine explosion and who was a community leader who promoted patriotism and education.
  • Hector P. Garcia Middle School (opening 2007)
    700 E. 8th St.

    Named for the civil rights activist and founder of the American GI Forum who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Ronald Reagan in 1984.
  • Arturo Salazar Elementary School (opening 2006)
    1120 S. Ravinia

    Named for the DISD educator and principal of Thomas J. Rusk Middle School and Anson Jones and Robert E. Lee elementaries who later was executive director of the district’s Career and Technology Education Department.

DISTRICT 8

  • Roy P. Benavidez Elementary School (pending)
    Named for the former Green Beret sergeant who received the Medal of Honor from President Ronald Reagan for heroism while wounded in the Vietnam War.
  • Leonides Gonzalez Cigarroa M.D. Elementary School (opening 2006)
    9990 Webb Chapel Rd.

    Named for the physician and civic leader whose ultimate goal was to provide more educational opportunities to area youth.
  • Francisco F. “Pancho” Medrano Middle School (pending)
    Named for the activist who worked alongside César Chávez for equal rights and with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in the civil rights movement.

DISTRICT 9

  • Harold Wendell Lang Sr. Middle School (opening 2007)
    1678 Chenault Street

    Named for the former N.W. Harllee Elementary School principal (1957-1971) and DISD administrator who later was director/principal of the Lincoln High School renovation project (1975-80).
  • Frank Guzick Elementary School (opening 2006)
    5000 Berridge Lane

    Named for the DISD teacher, administrator, and coach who was principal of Rylie Junior High School, Crozier Tech, and Skyline High School.

ATHLETIC FACILITY

  • Jesse Owens Memorial Complex (opened 2005)
    9191 S. Polk St.

    Named for the Olympic athlete who broke world records at the Berlin Games in 1936 and was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Gerald Ford in 1976 and received the Living Legend Award at the White House a year later.

FOOD SERVICE FACILITY (opening 2007)

  • Maria Luna Food Service Facility
    1515 Grand Ave.
    Named for the Mexican immigrant and community leader in Little Mexico who was the only female charter member of the Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
