Learning Communities and Districts
The Dallas Independent School District is comprised of seven Learning Communities, organized by geographical location and by elementary and secondary schools. Click here for more information.
The Dallas Independent School District is apportioned into nine areas of similar population called trustee districts. Individual trustees are elected by citizens in each trustee district to serve three-year terms. Each trustee must reside within his or her area of representation. Serving without compensation, trustees establish the policies by which district schools operate.
Trustee Responsibilities
In carrying out its duties, the Board of Trustees identifies needs and establishes priorities for the school district, allocates financial and human resources among the priority areas, and evaluates school performance. The Board of Trustees is empowered to provide tax funds for maintenance and operation of the schools and to submit bond issues to be voted on by the people of Dallas for construction of school facilities.
Each of the nine trustee districts benefits from the $1.37 billion bond program, Building Dallas' Future. All trustee districts are receiving additions and/or renovations to a majority of their schools and most are receiving at least one new school or facility.
