Community Service with Special Olympics April 2014
GARZA ECHS students under the leadership of Coach Finley, our Health and Fitness leader, volunteered to assist with Special Olympics in April 2014.  Our students served as "encouragers"  - those students who cheered and encouraged the Special Olympics participants onward in their races and competitions.  We didn't post the faces, but you can be sure they were filled with smiles!  Everyone was a WINNER!  These small acts of kindness and compassion define what we think great GARZA ECHS students are!

  • Class of 2014 Seniors visit the Texas State Capitol and University of Texas at Austin

Seniors took a charter bus to Austin to tour the State Capitol and the University of Texas at Austin.  They toured the beautiful grounds of the State Capitol and the inside of the Capitol Building where the legislature meets.  Afterwards, they ate lunch at a dormitory on the campus of UT Austin.  The day was filled with exploration and inspiration!
Way to go Class of 2014!

    SMU field trip

What an eye-opening experience!  Our tenth graders toured the Meadows Museum with a writing assignment  and "look-for" list.  After visiting the art museum, they toured the SMU campus and were all enthusiastic about the college.  Well-behaved and well-mannered ~ that was the feedback from the museum and SMU greeters.  Those Garza blazers are sharp looking!

  • Garrett Boone and class officers

On October 16, Garza ECHS had a new principal for the day!  Garrett Boone, Chairman Emeritus of the Container Store and Chairman of the Boone Foundation, experienced a day in the life of a high school principal.  Mr. Boone visited science labs, English Literature classrooms, reviewed our school data, met individual students who had questions, and met with our college partner, Mountain View College President, Felix Zamora.

Most importantly, he met with the Garza Student Leadership Team (class officers from 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades) to take questions from the students about leadership.  Some of the questions were:  "How do you get unity among the group you lead?"; "When did you decide to go into business for yourself?"; "How do you suggest we communicate our message?"  "How can you become an entrepreneur?"

A picture of Mr. Boone with Jonathan Gonzalez, Senior Class President, and Omar Salazar, Junior Class President, was taken before both class officers left to represent Garza ECHS at the DISD Teen School Board.

It was a great day for all!  The students loved having this legendary leader in our school and we think that Mr. Boone enjoyed seeing the practical and positive things going on at Garza ECHS!
