Special
Programs
Construction
Apprenticeship
The Construction Apprenticeship Program combines four trade
programs: Building Trades, Electrical Trades, Heating, Ventilation
and Air Conditioning (HVAC), and Plumbing. Students enrolled
in this cluster will gain competence and understanding for
the building trades industries. They will spend a two-year
rotation in the trades of carpentry, electrical, heat/ventilation/air-conditioning
and refrigeration, piping, and engineering drafting. The junior
and senior years of the cluster are spent in specializing
in a specific trade. Students will have the opportunity to
work in an apprenticeship and earn Tech Prep credits during
their senior year.
Skyline
Career Development Center offers all four classes. Electrical
Trades is taught at Roosevelt High School and Building Trades
at Samuell High School, North Dallas and Multiple Careers
Magnet Center.
The
Apprenticeship Program is supported by The Construction Apprenticeship
Advisory Board made up of individuals from the North Texas
Chapter of the Associated
Builders and Contractors.
Adult
Apprenticeship
Adults interested in apprenticeship training are provided
classes through four trade organizations. Contact the union
or trade group for more information about training and employment
requirements. Programs currently working with Dallas ISD are
Ironworkers, Electricians, Painters, and Heating and Frost Insulators.
Summer
Law Internship Program
Each summer, the Dallas Bar Association, in partnership with
the Dallas Independent School District, provides an eight-week
paid internship opportunity for selected junior high school
students. Students complete an application process with their
high school counselor and are interviewed for selection to
participate in the program. Education evens are held each
Friday and students visit locations, such as the Dallas county
courts, the Belo Mansion, and various law firms. Students
are introduced to professional opportunities available to
them in the legal profession.
This summer, 27 Dallas law firms and corporate or public legal
departments provided internships for 29 students.
For information about summer 2006, contact your high school
counselor.
Job
Shadowing for SLC High Schools
The
Greater Dallas Chamber sponsors job shadowing for ninth grade
students who are part of a Smaller Learning Community high
school. Students spend a day in October in a local area Dallas
business where they learn about that business or industry.
