Family and Consumer Science Education prepares students for
personal and family life across the life span as they manage
the challenges of living and working in a diverse, global
society. The program focus is on family life, work life, and
career by providing opportunities to develop the knowledge,
skills, and behaviors needed for:
• Strengthening the well-being of individuals
and families across the life
• span.
• Becoming responsible citizens and leaders
in family, community, and
• career settings.
• Promoting optimal nutrition and wellness
across the life span.
• Managing resources to meet the material
needs of individuals and families.
• Balancing personal, home, family, community,
and career roles.
• Achieving successful life management,
employment, and career
• development.
• Functioning effectively as providers and
consumers of goods and services.
• Obtaining entry level positions (providing
the foundation for further
• training/education
and advancement) in family and consumer sciences

other related careers.

Family and Consumer Science Education includes instructional
programs in the following content specialization: Family Studies
and Human Services; Child Development, Education, and Services;
Nutrition and Wellness/Food Science and Technology; Hospitality;
Consumer and Resource Management; Textiles and Apparel and
Environmental Design. Some courses within Family and Consumer
Science Education include content from multiple content specialization.
Middle School
• One course, Skills for Living, is available
for 7th- and 8th-grade students.
High
School - Family and Personal Skills
• Eighteen semester and full-year courses are
available in such areas as child development, apparel, nutrition
and food science, environmental design, consumer economics,
family studies.

School - Cooperative Education
• Juniors and seniors may enroll in Family and
Consumer Economics Career
Preparation (FCSCP), where they are placed on a paid training
station for a minimum of 15 hours per week and participate
in a career preparation class
during the school day.
Tech
Prep and Dual Credit
•
Both Tech Prep and Dual Credit courses are available
in Family and Consumer Sciences courses. Look for choices
about child development.
