Introduction
to Health Science Technology
– Grade: 9 - 12; Credit: 1/2 - 1
This course gives an overview of the therapeutic, diagnostic,
environmental, and informational systems of the health
care industry. The focus is on career exploration, leadership
development, ethical and legal issues, and the history, economics,
and trends in financing health care. Students will develop
a concept of health and wellness from the perspective of a
health consumer as well as a potential professional in the
health care industry. Course is called Health Care Science
at High School for Health Professions.
Health Science Technology I
– Grades 9-12; Credit: 1 - 2;
Requisite: Introduction to Health Science Technology and
Biology recommended.
A course designed to develop health-care-specific knowledge
and skills in effective communications, ethical and legal
responsibilities, client care, safety, first aid, and CPR.
This course prepares the student for the transition to clinical
or work-based experiences in health care. Available
at Spruce High School. High School for Health Professions
offers specializations in Dental Assistant, Nurse Assisting,
Dental Lab Technician, Medical Lab Technician, and Veterinary
Assistant. (Tech Prep program)
Health
Science Technology II
– Grades 11 - 12; Credits: 2 - 4;
Prerequisites: Health Science Technology I, Biology, Chemistry
A course designed to provide for the development of multi-occupational
knowledge and skills related to a wide variety of health careers.
Students will have hands-on experiences for continued knowledge
and skill development. Available at Spruce High School. High
School for Health Professions offers specializations in Dental
Assistant, Nurse Assistant, Dental Lab Technician, Medical
Lab Technician, and Veterinary Assistant. (Tech Prep program)
Health Science Technology III
– Grades 11 - 12, Credits: 1 - 2;
Prerequisites: Health Science Technology II
An occupationally specific course(s) designed to provide knowledge
and skills for certification or licensure in an allied health
career. Students develop advanced clinical skills necessary
for employment in the health care industry or continued education
in health careers. High
School for Health Professions offers specializations in cooperative
education and Therapy Careers.
Anatomy
and Physiology of Human Systems
– Grades 11 - 12, Credits: 1;
Prerequisites: Biology and Chemistry
In this course, students conduct laboratory investigations
and fieldwork, use scientific methods during investigations,
and make informed decisions using critical thinking and problem
solving. Topics will be presented through an integration of
biology, chemistry, and physics. Students will study the structures
and functions of the human body and body systems and will
investigate the body’s responses to forces, maintenance
of homeostasis, electrical interactions, transport systems,
and energy systems. This course must include at least 40%
laboratory investigation and fieldwork using appropriate scientific
inquiry. Counts as Science Credit.
Basics
of Pathophysiology
– Grades 11 - 12, Credits: 1;
Prerequisites: Biology, Chemistry
In this course, students conduct laboratory investigations
and fieldwork, use scientific methods during investigations,
and make informed decisions using critical thinking and problem
solving. Students study disease processes and how humans are
affected. Emphasis is placed on prevention and treatment of
diseases. Students will differentiate between normal and abnormal
physiology. The course must include at least 40% laboratory
investigation and fieldwork using appropriate scientific inquiry.

Pharmacology
– Grades 11 - 12, Credits: 1/2;
Prerequisites: Health Science I, Biology, Chemistry
This course provides students with knowledge and skills in
the classification and study of pharmacological agents to
understand the treatment, care, and restoration of the client’s
health. Students will explore the practical applications of
mathematics related to the disease process, dosage calculations,
and interaction in therapeutic care. Available
at High School for Health Professions.

Medical Technician

Mental
Health
– Grades 11 - 12, Credits: 1/2;
Prerequisites: Health Science I, Biology, Chemistry
This course is an introduction to mental health services,
careers, history, agencies, current issues, and the difference
between functional and dysfunctional behaviors. Students develop
an awareness of the factors that affect mental health by exploring
traditional and emerging treatment modalities. Available at
High School for Health Professions. This is offered as a dual
credit course to students who qualify.
