Volunteering for the EEC
The staff at the Environmental Center is small. Volunteers, through their gift of time, make a significant contribution to the Environmental Center program by allowing us to serve more visitors and by helping out in other needed areas such as special events, animal care and general maintenance.
Certain categories, such as museum guides and trail walk guides, will require training and this training is provided by the Environmental Center staff. In addition, as a functional unit of the Dallas schools, any adult volunteers who will be working directly with students will be required to pass a background check. Other volunteer positions such as animal care helpers or working in the gardens or grounds do not involve a lot of training and do not require a background check.
For more information about volunteering at the Center, call 972-749-6900 or email us at: envedctr@dallasisd.org
Placement is available in the following areas:
Trail Guides Trail guides are needed throughout the year
(Monday-Friday, 9:00am-2:30pm and selected Saturdays) to lead school
groups and other visitors on the Center's nature trails. No experience is
necessary. Just an enthusiasm for nature and sharing it with others. Training
provided.
Museum Guides/Docents Volunteers are needed to welcome guests/groups as they arrive, answer questions and lead them through the museum exhibit areas. Duties include learning about the information contained in the museum exhibits and assisting visitors with additional information and directions as they move through and interact with the exhibits in the main building. Monday-Friday 9:30am-2:30pm and selected Saturdays. Training provided.
Petting Farm Guides This involves sharing information about the various farm animals at the Environmental Center barn and is similar in nature to the Museum Guide position. Volunteers lead groups to the barn, share information about the animals and assist visitors as they view, feed and pet the animals in the barn. Monday-Friday 9:30am-2:30pm and selected Saturdays. Training provided.
Animal Care Assistants - "Critter Wranglers" There are a variety of live animals at the Center which require
daily/weekly care. If you like animals (of all types, including reptiles and
birds), this is the
job for you. Involves feeding, changing water, and general animal
care including replacement of bedding, cage cleaning, and other tasks.
Directions and "on the job training" provided.
Green Thumbs The Center has numerous native plant garden areas that are in
constant need of care/upkeep. If you enjoy gardening, working in the outdoors
and working with a variety of native Texas plants, this is for you. Tasks
include mulching, transplanting, weeding, watering, and other basic gardening
tasks. Information and on the job training will be provided.
