Welcome to the Readers Are Leaders Toolkit

All the tools needed to run a successful Readers Are Leaders program are in the toolkit.  Included are recordkeeping charts, book lists, spine labels, program logos, book trailers, SMART Board lessons, activities, stickers, etc.  The items are organized by reading lists, i.e., all the 2x2 items are in the 2x2 section.  There is also a general section for the Readers Are Leaders program which includes the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions or guidelines of the program) for both elementary and middle school levels.  The Readers Are leaders reps will present the latest news and activities at each Learning Community meeting.

Every elementary or middle school is eligible and encouraged to participate in the program.  Students and teachers will benefit from the program by enjoying quality literature and a friendly competition.  The library will enjoy a possible increase in circulation.  Finally, the librarian can sponsor a local reading program with built-in support and tools for successful and easy implementation.

Our Mission
The Readers Are Leaders mission is to increase reading for pleasure.  Research shows that students who self-select books for reading become better and more motivated readers.  Promoting reading for pleasure is one way to highlight the library’s contribution to student achievement.

History of the Readers Are Leaders Program
The Readers Are Leaders program was created in the Spring of 2004 from an initiative to increase elementary school participation in the Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) program.  Walter Betts selected a group of interested librarians to develop activities and promote participation in TBA.  When Gay Patrick was named Director of Library Media Services in 2004, she further encouraged participation in TBA by funding registrations and a set of Bluebonnet books for 100 elementary schools.  The program has expanded to include all elementary grade levels. The program rose from a small group of 60 students attending the Tea to now over 539 students in 2009 reaching goal.  In 2007 the Luminarias List was created to encourage reading among our Spanish-speaking elementary students.  Middle schools were invited to participate in Readers Are Leaders in the fall of 2008, expanding the audience of the reading program.
