Welcome to Health Services

Suzanne Kubelka, Director

The Health Services Department provides services to remove health barriers to learning and strengthen the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of students in our district. Our team includes a medical consultant, director, school nurses, social workers, audiologists, and paraprofessionals that all work towards this goal. The ability to learn at school is directly related to the status of a student's health. Identification of health related barriers to learning are crucial to the provision of an appropriate educational plan for every student.

Health Services promotes healthy living styles and the prevention of illness and disability in three primary areas of focus: diabetes, obesity, and asthma. Through preventive health, health assessments and referral services, health barriers to learning are removed or modified to lessen the impact on the learning process.

The school health program consists of the delivery of direct health services to students and support to staff. This is accomplished through emergency management, communicable disease control, administration and/or supervision of medications and special procedures, electronic health record maintenance, health counseling, and health promotion utilizing agencies and programs in the district and community. Health Services' staff collaborates with students, parents, teachers, and other school and community professionals to support student achievement.

Children and youth live in a complex, fast-paced world that exposes them to significant health risks. Research indicates that these health risks impact student achievement. Education and health are interdependent. The goal of a school health program is to facilitate student achievement, academic success, and promote student commitment to life-long health.

Our Mission

The mission of Health Services Department in the Dallas Independent School District is to enhance the educational process through removal of health barriers to learning by promoting optimal levels of wellness and environmental safety for students and staff.
