Six Dallas high schools ranked tops in the region by Children at Risk

Five middle schools and three elementary schools also ranked at top

Six Dallas ISD high schools have been ranked within the top 10 in the region according to a new study released Sept. 14 by Children At Risk. Two of the schools, School of Science and Engineering and School for the Talented and Gifted, both at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Magnet Center, were ranked no. 1 and 2, respectively.

In addition, Dallas ISD has all top five middle schools and three of the top five elementary schools in the region.

Children At Risk has been ranking schools in the Greater Houston area for the last four years. This year, researchers included other major cities in the state as part of the rankings study.

The organization noted that the science and engineering magnet and talented and gifted magnet will be listed as the top two high schools in the state when final ratings are made available later this fall.

Researchers based their methodology on 14 measures of performance using 2007 and 2008 data to evaluate how well schools are preparing students for post-secondary success. Among them were the four-year graduation rate, participation in advanced coursework, and performance on college entrance exams.

"The schools that ranked highly by this organization are doing an outstanding job for the students they serve," said Dallas ISD Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa. "Because these schools have performed so well for so long, it is sometimes easy to take their success for granted, but no one should. The attention to rigorous instruction at each of these campuses should continually be appreciated."
