The Dallas ISD has released its lists of school supplies that are recommended for students in kindergarten through sixth-grade for the 2009-2010 school year.

Dallas ISD awarded $969,477 federal grant to improve teaching of American history

The district is one of 123 districts nationwide to have been awarded funding to improve student achievement by enhancing teachers' knowledge of American history through intensive ongoing professional development in both content and research-based teaching strategies. Grantees must partner with one or more organizations that have extensive knowledge of American history such as libraries, museums, nonprofit history or humanities organizations, and institutions of higher education.

Six Dallas ISD high schools have been ranked within the top 10 in the region according to a new study released Sept. 14 by Children At Risk. Two of the schools, School of Science and Engineering and School for the Talented and Gifted, both at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Magnet Center, were ranked no. 1 and 2, respectively.

HP and NBA team up to enhance students' skills

Dallas Maverick guard Jason Terry took time to encourage students to stay in school during a recent visit to Alex W. Spence Middle Learning Center as he delivered computers and printers to the school. Terry’s visit was part of the HP Digital Assist educational grant competition, a nationwide program that partners HP with the NBA in an effort to enhance students’ math, science, and reading skills.

Dallas Cowboys' Ken Hamlin unveils 'FitSchools' overhaul at Thompson Learning Center

Dallas Cowboys safety Ken Hamlin and Men’s Health magazine unveiled the FitSchools initiative at H.S. Thompson Learning Center. The program is designed to improve the school’s physical education equipment and motivate students to be active. Hamlin and members of FitSchools and Men’s Health encouraged students to get involved in activities using newly donated equipment in order to highlight the importance of maintaining healthy habits and leading healthy lifestyles.

Audit 2008-2009 shows progress

The Dallas Independent School District Audit Committee was presented a preliminary report of the district's 2008-09 audit on Nov. 16 from independent auditors Deloitte and Touche.

The preliminary report audit shows significant improvement from the previous two audits conducted by Deloitte and Touche. The final version of the audit will be presented to the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees Nov. 19.
