11/06/2009 The Children's Defense Fund Beat the Odds Scholarship

The Children's Defense Fund Beat the Odds Scholarship program honors, celebrates, and rewards outstanding high school seniors who have managed tremendous adversity to achieve academic excellence, give back to and provide leadership in the community and now aspire to attend college to continue their education.

Scholarship applicants must be nominated by an adult who is both willing and able to shepherd the student throughout tha application, selection and award process. The Nominator must complete the Beat the Odds Scholarship Nomination Form. In collaboration with the student applicant, the nominator should confirm that the scholarship application packet submitted is complete, meets the eligibility guidelines and arrives on or before the deadline. To get to the application, click the website, then top left How DCF Helps America's Children, on the left click Youth Development & Leadership Training, then look for Beat the Odds Program and find Dallas for the Dallas scholarship application or see your school counselor.

Nominees for the Beat the Odds Scholarship must meet all of the following:

  • Presently attends a public, private, charter, home or alternative school within the geographic boundaries of the Dallas Independent School District;
  • Will graduate by July 2010;
  • Will attend a four-year college or university in the Fall 2010;
  • Has achieved a GPA and class ranking which demonstrates academic success;
  • Has demonstrated community service, volunteerism and commitment to leadership development;
  • Has experienced and overcome diversity. Adverse conditions are not limited to, but may result from poverty, disability, family situation, homelessness or abuse.

What is HAS?

An interactive, online learning experience where students complete Web-based lessons during the school year and travel to NASA for a six-day summer experience where they work NASA engineers and scientists developing a mission to Mars.

Can teachers participate?

Absolutely! Certified Texas teachers serve as HAS counselors during the summer and are an integral part of the program. Selected teachers receive a stipend and guide the students' learning experience. Teacher applications will be available on the website in the spring.

11/16/2009 ACLU Foundation Scholarship

The purpose of the ACLU Foundation scholarship is to provide young civil liberties activists with financial assistance in obtaining a college degree. The scholarship is intended to pay for tuition and room/board for the recipient's first year of college, and will be sent directly to the college's office of financial aid. In the event that the recipient should receive a full scholarship from his/her college and not need to pay for these expenses, the scholarship can only be used for other direct educational expenses for the recipient's first year of college. 15 scholarship winners will each receive $7,000 toward their first year of college.

To qualify, you must:

  • Have demonstrated a strong commitment to civil liberties through some form of activism
  • Be a high school senior planning on entering an accredited college or university as a full-time, degree seeking student
  • Have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the time of graduation
  • Not be a current ACLU plaintiff or witness in a legal case

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is a community-conscious, action-oriented organization. Since its inception in Dallas in 1931, Kappa Zeta Chapter, the local arm of this organization, has provided services and support to the Dallas Metroplex. One of our major thrusts is scholarship which has been the impetus for awards averaging $5,000 -$10, 000 per year to deserving high school seniors who participate in our special scholarship program. This year, however, we are pleased to announce the availability of the following scholarships:

  • The Jose Wshington Memorial Scholarship (in the amount of $500.00) will be awarded to a high school senior who has contributed outstanding service to the Dallas community.
  • The Fairrialla E. White Scholarship (in the amount of $500.00) is an academic-based scholarship for young ladies.

02/15/2010 University of Texas at Arlington 2010-2011 Merit Scholarships

Upon admission to the University of Texas at Arlington, eligible undergraduate students will receive automatic consideration for general academic scholarships administered through the UT Arlington Scholarship Office. For the 2009-10 academic year, UT Arlington awarded more than $35 million in scholarship money to help students pay for school over the course of their college careers. The deadline to be admitted for scholarship consideration for the 2010-2011 academic year is Monday, February 15, 2010. See you counselor for more information.


03/01/2010 Hispanic College Fund and PepsiCo Scholarship

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, PepsiCo is partnering with the Hispanic College Fund (HCF) to promote higher education amung Hispanic students. Th;e 2009 Pepsi Hispanic Heritage Month program's main feature, is the bilingual website. The program will launch on September 14th and end October 18th to coincide with Hispanic Heritage Month. The site's main feature is an opportunity for students to apply to a special merit scholarship, where the recipients will be selected by HCF. Thirty PepsiCo scholarships will provide recipients with financial assistance for their college and post-graduate studies:

  • 5 Major Awards - $4000 Tuition Scholarship each
  • 25 Secondary Awards -$500 Tuition each

Entries for the merit-based scholarships will be accepted online. Applicants will have until March 1, 2010, from their date of entry to submit paperwork required for consideration.

Texas Instruments Math Scholars Program
The program offers scholarships to students who pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics with Secondary Teacher Certification at the University of North Texas Dallas campus. Scholarships will cover up to 15 credit hours taken at the UNT Dallas campus. Eligibility requirements include 45 or more credit hours and a cumulative grade point average of 2.75.

  • Completion of Calculus I and Calculus II with a grade of "C" or above
  • Admission to the University of North Texas
  • Enrollment for 15 credit hours each consecutive fall and spring semester
  • Completion of an end-of-program assessment
  • Submission of a letter of appreciation to Texas Instruments
  • Upon graduation, teach in Dallas or a surrounding area school district for a minimum of two years.

Texas Exemption Programs

Exemptions are programs that allow Texas public colleges and universities to lower tuition for eligible students. Texas has these programs for some students who:

  • Were in foster care
  • Were adopted
  • Were Valedictorians
  • Are blind
  • Are deaf
  • Were early high school graduates
  • Are children of disabled or deceased peace officers
  • Are children of POWS or MIAs
  • Are children of deceased veterans
  • Are children of parents receiving TANF benefits
  • Are children of deceased public servants
