Parental Public School Choice

A major component of Dallas Achieves! is providing parents with a choice when it comes to selecting their child’s secondary school. In response to one of the Dallas Achieves! recommendations, the district is developing Parental Public School Choice to provide parents with the opportunity to choose their child’s school program at transitional years, which will include grades 5 and 8 (entering grades 6 and 9, respectively).

In the 2008-2009 school year, the district is piloting Parental Public School Choice with selected programs for students in grade 8 only. As the parent/guardian of an eighth grade student you have two choices:

1. Complete an application to place your child in the lottery for the programs included in the pilot or,
2. Have them to attend the high school in their attendance zone.

There are four steps to completing the Parental Public School Choice application.

Step 1: Fill out the student information completely
Step 2: Mark your first, second, and third choices
Step 3: Check one of the Student Transportation Options for School Choice
Step 4: Sign and date the application and return it to your child’s school by April 11, 2008
