What can a partner do?

Partner groups can provide…

  • Volunteers to serve as tutors, mentors, readers, or assistants
  • Incentives for students/teachers for performance and attendance
  • Internships or job shadowing opportunities for students/teachers
  • Professional development and training for staff/administrators
  • Teaching aids, supplies and equipment such as books, computers, audio/visual equipment, and other items
  • Enrichment activities for after-school, spring/summer break programs
  • Career counseling and job preparation services for middle and high school students
  • In-kind services such as designing, printing, copying, refreshments, etc.
  • Financial contributions to secure non-funded items such as playground equipment, professional development, Reading Is Fundamental materials, research projects or newspaper supplements
  • Parent training sessions on-site for employee-parents, helping increase parental involvement
  • Scholarships for students/teachers for academic and professional success
  • Grants for school improvement plans or innovations in education
  • Management consultants to administrators and teachers
  • Retreats/events for schools, district departments, or the board of trustees
  • Site visits to other districts to learn about innovations and reform efforts
  • Renovation crews and supplies for classrooms or schools
  • Corporate policies supporting parent-school-community collaboration
  • Transportation for site visits, retreats, field trips, etc.

Partners can be…

  • Speakers for classrooms presentations, school assemblies, or for community groups on behalf of the DISD
  • Judges of student and teacher competitions
  • Advisers with campus site-based decision-making committees or the superintendent’s advisory committees
  • Tutors in reading, math, science and other academic areas
  • Mentors for students who need a friend or for teachers and administrators who want to enhance their skills
  • Readers in the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program at our schools
  • Volunteers to help English as a Second Language (ESL) students learn and practice English
  • “Special attention” volunteers for students in the dropout prevention program
  • Advocates for public education, helping to communicate information about the district and working to secure funds for innovations and improvements
