Almost 19,000 volunteers
worked in Dallas ISD schools during the 2006-2007 school year and
almost 11,000 worked with special districtwide programs,
such as advisory committees, Communities in Schools, Junior
Achievement, Texas Scholars, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and
job shadowing. The contributions of volunteers amount to
almost 600,000 hours spent working to improve the educational
experience of students throughout the district.
Volunteers serve as tutors and mentors; others serve as
classroom speakers, Texas Scholars presenters, judges,
and members of advisory or site-based committees. Also
among the thousands of parent and individual volunteers,
are those who assist school librarians, nurses, teachers,
office and cafeteria managers, and other staff.
