History
The department began as a security force in 1969, but began the transition into a fully-functioning police department by the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees in March of 2003. Since 2003, the department has increased its ranks to more than 110 sworn officers in three divisions—campus services, patrol, and criminal investigations—with an end-goal of a police force of 135 commissioned police officers..
In September of 2003, the district received a $1.8 million grant from Community Oriented Policing Services to hire additional law enforcement officers for the department.
