This program promotes student development in social responsibility,
civic duty, and public service by reporting criminal conduct on school
property and/or school sponsored events. Monetary awards funded by the
North Texas Crime Commission, private donations, and other fund
raising activities are made to students who provide information to local
law enforcement which results in the arrest or detention of the
perpetrators of these criminal activities. Forty-seven secondary schools
currently participate in the Crime Stoppers program.
During the end of the year 2004, the program organized a districtwide
board to represent all the campuses, hear all of the cases, and make a
determination as to what reward amounts are to be paid. The board is
comprised of 18 students who are enrolled in the Magnet Center for
Public Service: Government, Law and Law Enforcement at Yvonne A. Ewell
Townview Center. The meetings are held every Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. in
room 205 at the high school. The creation of this board has reduced
paperwork at the campus level and has provided more time for
investigations. These students also represented the DISD at a state
conference held in Corpus Christi in November 2004, at Austin in November 2005 and are preparing to attend this year in Odessa. As of March 2005,
the program has paid out more than $12,500 in rewards with more than 280
tips received.
