Welcome to the Walnut Hill Elementary School website.  If you browse our web pages you will find many facts, figures and pictures that show what we are learning and doing at Walnut Hill.

Walnut Hill was named a 2004 21st Century School of Distinction Award winner for our implementation of technology. 2004 was the first year of the program with more than 1,200 schools appyling and 20 schools being recognized. Walnut Hill was one of two schools to win the Technology Implementation category.

Walnut Hill was named a 2000 National School of Character  by the Character Education Partnership. We were one of nine schools across the nation and the only Texas school chosen to receive this distinguished award.  Jayne’ Anthony was chosen as a Disney American Teacher Honoree

.  She was one of 33 honorees selected from 70,000 teachers nationwide. This Disney award recognizes teachers who use innovative teaching practices that actively engage students in learning.

We are very proud that Walnut Hill was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 1998-99. This great honor signifies the quality of education and teamwork between the school, the parents and the community that makes Walnut Hill so special. In addition, Walnut Hill was selected as one of only five schools in the nation to receive the 1998-99 Special Emphasis Award in Character Education in recognition of our Character Counts program!

Welcome to our new Principal, Mr. Brian Lusk. He is a strong leader who cares greatly for our students, staff and parents. In his first year as Principal he has implemented many programs and policies that will continue to make Walnut Hill a wonderful place of learning. We are also very proud of our past Principal of 10 years, Mrs. Jo Anne Hughes who was named DISD Elementary School Principal of the Year for 1998 to 1999. Mrs. Hughes was loved and has moved on to another position within the DISD.

Walnut Hill: cultivating positive, productive world leaders

Mission: The Walnut Hill Elementary School's faculty, parents and students recognize that quality instruction not only enhances students' learning today, but also sets the stage for overall individual and special success. In light of this knowledge, we are committed to the development and implementation of the necessary programs in order to cultivate positive, independent, lifelong learners, caring individuals, outstanding community, and global leaders.

Together we can make it work

History:  Walnut Hill had its beginnings in 1916 when the farmers in a rural area north of Dallas built a three room brick building with pot-bellied stoves and named it Walnut Hill School. The first graduating class consisted of four students. The present building was completed in 1937 with a faculty of three. Walnut Hill School was annexed by DPS in May of 1946. Additions were made to the school in the 1950's when enrollment increased to almost 1500 students. Today, Walnut Hill Elementary School serves an urban community of over 350 families. Its curriculum, staff and facilities are up-to-date and among the finest. Yet it retains its rich heritage: a desire for quality education, dedication from the community, and the highest degree of love and concern of teachers, staff and parents for its students.
