All students at Greiner are placed on academic teams. Students are enrolled in seven classes, which include Language Arts, Math, Science, Reading, Social Studies, and Electives. All students are required to take one semester of Physical Education each year and only one semester of Computer Literacy. W. E. Greiner Middle School expects all students to complete all assignments on time. Failure to do so will result in a grade of zero. Only students with excused absences will be allowed to make up work.

ESL

The Dallas Independent School District secondary English as a Second Language program is a comprehensive instructional program designed to meet the linguistic and academic needs of speakers of other languages students. The ESL program provides limited English proficient (LEP) students with sequential instruction for the acquisition of basic interpersonal communicative skills and cognitive academic language proficiency skills. The program ensures that LEP students are provided the same academic and extra curricular opportunities as English proficient students.

JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY

The National Junior Honor Society is a national organization of students joined together by service, character, and citizenship. A cumulative grade average of 92 must be earned in all a student's classes during the 7th grade school year to qualify for membership.Other considerations for membership in NJHS are leadership, good character, and citizenship.

A special initiation ceremony honoring new National Junior Honor Society students is held every year in the Spring.

MIDDLE SCHOOL PSAT

All eighth grade students are encouraged to take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) in October. It is used at the middle school level for talent identification, and as a counseling tool to provide college awareness and academic motivation. Schools may elect to provide, at their own cost, student seminars outside of the regular school day designed for college scholarship/exam readiness. Students are responsible for testing fees.

TAG - Interdisciplinary Seminar

The Talented and Gifted Interdisciplainary Seminar is an elective middle school course designed to meet the needs of identified students. The class is taught by teachers trained in the areas of Talented and Gifted. The course is interdisciplainary in nature and enhances the four core curriculum subjects by adding depth, complexity, and pacing. The program provides direct, intensive assistance to students engaged in independent projects; promotes thinking skills, discovery learning, student initiated research and other activities designed to enrich the curriculum; focuses on talent development; and identfies and brings community resources to the campus to assist in instruction. Only students screened and identified as Gifted/Talented may choose this elective.

Pre-AP or Pre-Honors

PreAdvanced Placement courses are offered in English Language Arts and Math in 7th and 8th grades. Any student may enroll in the college preparatory courses.

If a student is screened and identified for gifted and talented services; they must be placed into one of these courses, unless parent submits letter requesting them not to be in a PreAP course.

Algebra I - 8th grade

The following criteria shall be considered in determining the student's eligibility for placement in Pre-AP Algebra I, which will be offered only in grade 8:

  1. A fall semester average of 80 or above in the student's Math class.
  2. A passing score on the currently district-selected algebra readiness measure.

If these criteria have not been met, a student's parent may request that the student take the course and shall sign an agreement to assist in monitoring and supporting the progress of the student in the course.

Middle School students may be admitted to Pre-AP Algebra I during the beginning of the academic year only. The student must complete both the fall semester and spring semester in order to receive high school credit.
