OPTIONAL ELECTIVES

ART

This course explores the elements and principles of art. The student will experiment with a variety of art materials and tools through studies in design, drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and other art areas. The course also promotes aesthetic growth through a study of art history and art appreciation.

ATHLETICS

This course is equivalent to physical education courses. Students may be scheduled in one or two of the following activities: Football, Basketball, Soccer, Track, Volleyball, Softball & Baseball.

BAND

This elective course is for students who would like to play or learn to play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument. Students learn to play various musical selections in class.

CADETS

This elective helps students develop strong leadership skills, self-esteem, discipline and military and civilian courtesies. Students wear uniforms on designated days and participate in drills. Students choose between a course of study in Naval, Marines, Coast Guard or Air Force. Much of what the students learn will compliment science and social science courses.

CAREER INVESTIGATIONS

This course offers a study of the fifteen broad occupational clusters and allows students to evaluate their interests and aptitudes, to become informed about societal and economic factors that influence occupational choice and to learn about various educational programs and courses leading to preparation for a career field.

Related projects include interviews and filling out job applications.

FOLKLORICO

This course provides instruction in the fundamentals of style, performance quality, technique and theory of dance in ballet folklorico.


KEYBOARDING

This enrichment course develops psychomotor ability to operate the keyboard by touch with initial development of acceptable speed and accuracy levels; introduces a minimal amount of formatting; develops keyboarding speed and accuracy with correct technique.

MULTIMEDIA

This elective helps the student explore media technology and different parts of the media industry, including print journalism, radio and television broadcast, new media and production.

RECORD KEEPING

This enrichment course develops understanding of and skill in maintaining accurate records; includes skills used in everday business activities both for personal financial management, budgeting, financial planning, cashier's records, handling of money, and tasks common to simple office practices.

SPANISH

This course provides the fundamentals for a proficiency-based Spanish curriculum. Comprehension-based and affective-humanistic activities through Total Physical Response and Natural Approach along with authentic materials will help students acquire functional skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing.

SPEECH COMMUNICATION

Speech introduces students to the basic communcation processes. Students are provided opportunities to participate in a variety of formal and informal group discussions to prepare, deliver, and evaluate speeches.

SKILLS FOR LIVING

This comprehensive course is available for 7th and 8th graders and provides opportunities to explore family relationships and personal development, personal management, and planning for the future. Emphasis is on the importance of the family, effective communications skills, management skills, how to get along with others, decision making, acceptance of responsibility, and child care practices that promote positive self-image, nutrition, wellness, personal appearance, managing multiple roles, and career options.

TAG/PSAT

This elective course is designed to meet the needs of identified talented and gifted students. Interdisciplinary in nature, this course enhances the four foundation (core) curriculum subjects by adding depth, complexity, and pacing. It is a year long elective and can not be dropped once the student is accepted. In addition students are primed for the PSAT to acquire the skills that are assessed through the College Board Pre-Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

This course prepares students to function in careers that relate to teaching, communications, and management effectively. Students are members of the Texas Future Teachers of America Club.

REQUIRED ELECTIVES

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

Computer Literacy is an introductory course designed to provide students with a fundamental understanding of computers and information. This course familiarizes students with the interaction of computer hardware and software. Emphasis is placed on the application of microcomputers, the use of productivity software to gather, analyze, organize and present infromation, as well as the social and ethical aspects of the impact of computers on society.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

This course provides each student with the oppportunity for physical fitness assessment, growth and maintenance. Addressing both leisure and lifetime activities, skills are developed for individual, dual and team sports.

READING MASTERY

This course provides opportunities for students scoring below the 40th percentile on the reading section of the district's Norm Referenced Standardized Tests to develop vocabulary, thinking, comprehension, and study skills. Sheltered Language Arts students are eligible for these courses.
