AVID - Advancement Via Individual
Determination
AVID at J.L. Long Middle School
and Woodrow Wilson High School is a vertical structure
Advanced Academic elective class. Qualified students
are given school-day enrichment and support for success
in college preparatory PreAP and AP classes. AVID
is not a study hall. AVID is not tutoring
for "slow" students. AVID class
sessions rotate through skills development, note-taking
procedures, research techniques, personal organizational
strategies, higher-order thinking activities and structures
tutorial sessions.
Eligibility for AVID includes:
- B-average grades and 50-80%-ile
standardized test scores (ITBS)
- Passing TAKS Reading and Math
- Demonstrated willingness to put forth effort in academic
pursuits
- Good attendance
- Minimum discipline problems
- Low to Middle SES
- Cultural group typically under-represented in 4-yr.
college population
- First generation in family to attend college
Screening includes:
- Application completed by student and parent (advocate)
- Attendance at student/parent ( or "sponsor")
meeting
- Personal interview with members of the AVID team during
which time the student will be asked to write a composition
of approximately one page in length. Students will be
given "guiding questions" to address in the
composition.
AVID is not a study hall. AVID is not tutoring
for "slow" students. AVID students are requried
to participate in at least on PreAP class. At J.L. Long,
TAG students are served through PreAP classes: there is
no TAG class per se. TAG students who have not demonstrated
advanced academic ability may enroll for PreAP classes
and receive support for success through AVID. AVID students
are asked to commit 90 minutes of homework time per school
night. Parents (advocates) are asked to provide or insure
supervision of the student. AVID students are expected
to spend at least an hour per week in supervised tutoring
outside of class time.

Pre-AP or Pre-Honors:
Algebra I Eligibility
The following criteria shall be considered
in determining the student's eligibility for placement
in Pre-AP Algebra I, which will be offered only in grade
8:
- A fall semester average of 80 or above in the currently
enrolled mathematics course;
- a passing score on the current District-selected algebra
readiness measure.
If these criteria have not been met, a student's
parent may request that the student take the course and
shall sign an agreement to assist in monitoring and supporting
the progress of the student in the course.
Middle School students may be admitted to Pre-AP Algebra
I during the beginning of the academic year only. The
student must complete both the fall semester and spring
semester in order to receive high school credit.
