The Following Events occur yearly at J.L.Long:

  • Open House or "Mini-School" - September
    • Walk in their shoes! An evening is set aside for parents come to the school and are given their child's class schedule. When the bell rings they go from classroom to classroom to meet their child's teachers and get acquainted with the school in general.
  • Parent Teacher Conferences - Fall and Spring
    • Conferences occur between 4 - 8 pm on a weekday evening. Teachers will be stationed in their classrooms to meet and answer parent's questions.
  • Fun Run Fundraiser - October
    • Long's only fundraiser to bring special programs and improvements to the school. Sign up for a 1 mile certified 5K Race - walk or run. Award winners in several categories will be announced. Lots of drawings for free prizes from local vendors. Fiesta afterward with refreshments - hotdogs, chips, sodas, nachos. Held yearly on the front lawn of the school campus.


Fun Run
  • Fall Semester Dance - November
    • Fun for kids and adult volunteers. Held in the school cafeteria complete with D.J. music, funky dancing, and snack foods, it's Middle School heaven!
  • PTA Holiday Dinner - December
    • Holiday Celebration dinner at the home of a PTA member. All PTA members invited. Lots of good food and cheer.
  • J.L. Long Holiday Concert - December
    • Choral and instrumental performances are held yearly in the school auditorium. The Choral group performance will be in the evening. The J.L.Long Band will be performing along with the Faculty Singers during the school day. Dates and times vary year to year.
  • Dinner Theater by the Choral Dept. - February
    • Dinner Theatre is a fundraiser which begins in the school cafeteria. It combines the delectable Sam's lasagna with a silent auction all in one entrancing evening. Afterwards, all retire to the auditorium upstairs for show choir singing and dancing. And some of that silly stuff from the Extravaganza (see below).
  • Science Fair Judging - February
  • Spring Semester Dance - Valentine's Day
    • Take your sweetie to a dance! Fun for kids and adult volunteers. Held in the school cafeteria complete with D.J. music, funky dancing, and snack foods, it's Middle School heaven.
  • TAKS testing - February and April
  • Expectations Extravaganza - April
    • A full evening of Expectations singing and dancing. Expectations is the J.L. Long Show Choir. Solo and/or duet and trio acts, fun and silly entertainment.
  • J.L.Long Musical - May
    • The Musical is written, scored and directed by David Hirsch, with more direction and conducting from Beverly Hirsch. The musicals are always bizarre and you know you are really in trouble when you begin to understand them. David puts in an incredible amount of time to this, as does Ms. Hirsch, and the musical runs on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, with dress rehearsals Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and a cast party Saturday night after the musical until 12:00. Musicals of the past include "Pounding Iconoclastic Cultural Acoustical Energy", "The Lost Chord". "Faith of the Cynical", "Weird Creatures from Outer Space", and last year's "Newleyweds in Crisis", "Bad Hat Jack" .

  • Sports Awards Banquet - May
    • A P.T.A. sponsored dinner and awards banquet for all participants in J.L.Long school sports and their families. The event takes place in the school Cafeteria. Awards are given for the following :
      • One sport athletes
      • Two sport athletes
      • Three sport athletes
      • Four sport athletes
      • 'Iron Woman' Awards - six sports in 2 years
      • 'Iron Man' Awards - six sports in 2 years
      • Female Athlete of the Year
      • Male Athlete of the Year
      • Academic All-American Awards - District Award
  • J. L. Long Talent Show - May
    • Select acts perform on the auditorium stage and compete for lst, 2nd and 3rd place. If you like performing in front of an audience and want to show off your 'stuff', this is your opportunity! Find out who the faculty coordinator for this event is if you are interested. This event occurs during the school day and tickets can be purchased for a reasonable fee in advance.

Please Note:

Report Cards are issued every six weeks.

During Final Exams week for Fall and Spring, the students are released early after exams, see website calendar for specific dates and times.
