ADVANCED COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

This course will extend the knowledge and skills gained in Computer Literacy. Advanced uses of word processing, spreadsheets, databases as well as advanced use of multimedia, graphics, and printers will be explored. Concepts of BASIC programming and HTML will also be introduced. In this full-year elective, students create various multimedia projects for district and state competitions. The skills learned will benefit them in higher education as well as in the workforce.

The Longfellow Advanced Technology students have taken the top Secondary School Award at the Digital Extravaganza for three years in a row.

This year, Longfellow sent the first middle school robotics team to the state competition. In addition, a Longfellow team was one of six regional winners in the Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision competition. The competition was open to K-12 students in the United States, Canada and the defense departments schools around the world. Out of 1,000 entries at the 7-9 grade level, Longfellow placed first in this region. The team then had to create a website and build prototype of their technology creation. In May, they will learn who the first and second place teams will be.

ART

These sequential courses explore the elements and principles of art. The student will experiement with a variety of art materials and tools through studies in design, drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and other art areas. The courses also promote aesthetic growth through a study of art history and art appreciation.

ART- ADVANCED

Advanced Art expands upon the exploration of elements and principles of art as introduced in Beginning ART.

BAND

Band is divided into Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced classes. All bands are a mix of 7th and 8th graders:

Beginner students have little or no experience with musical instruments. This course is for students who would like to play or learn to play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument. Students learn to play various musical selections in class.

Intermediate students must have had Beginner Band or equivalent. Audition required for enrollment. This elective course is for students who would like to continue playing a band instrument.

Advanced students must audition and are placed by selection of the band teacher.Advanced band members must be willing to consistently apply themselves to the study of music in preparation for competitions and performances throughout the year.


BUSINESS SUPPORT

Students implement personal and interpersonal skills to strengthen individual performance in the workplace and in society and to make a successful transition to the workforce and/or postsecondary education. Students apply technical skills to address business applications of emerging technologies. Students develop a foundation in the economical, financial, technological, interenational, social, and ethical aspects of business to become competent comsumers, employees, and entrepreneurs. Students enhance reading, writing, computing, communications and reasoning skills and apply them to the business environment..

BUSINESS VENTURE

Students implement personal and interpersonal skills to strengthen individual performance in the workplace and in society and to make a successful transition to the workforce and/or postsecondary education. Students incorporate a broad base of knowledge that includes the legal, managerial, marketing, financial, ethical, and international dimensions of business to make appropriate business decisions.

Business Venture students have the opportunity to participate in the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) program. NFTE teaches entrepreneurship to young people from low-income communities to enhance their economics productivity by improving their business, academic and life skills. NFTE provides textbooks, workbooks, online curriculum (BizTech 2.0), wholesale field trip and semesterly business plan competition.

CHOIR - BEGINNING

This course is for students who would like to develop their vocal potential and musical background. No audition required.

CHOIR - ADVANCED

This elective course builds on the background established in beginning choir. Students develop their vocal potential and musical background by exploring vocal, choral and sight-reading techniques. Auditions are required for placement in this elective.

CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY - WOODSHOP

An exploratory course designed to provide an investigation of the types of activities performed in the construction industry. Through lab experiences students explore the skills and technologies of this industry. Content includes the application of technology, the design of products and services, emerging and innovative technologies, safety, maintenance of technology, marketing, technology-related careers, codes, laws and standards. Activities include building models of buildings, using construction tools and machines, and designing and building simple structures. At H. W. Longfellow students work on Woodshop projects.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

This course is offered for both 7th and 8th grade students. Both Spanish and French are taught at Longfellow by a teacher fluent in five languages. In these classes, you will not only learn how to speak the language, but also about the history of the language and the culture of the people. Students in the language classes earn high school credits transferable to the school of their choice. Longfellow offers classes in Spanish I and II, and in French I and II.

SKILLS FOR LIVING

This comprehensive course is available for 7th and 8th graders and provides opportunities to explore family relationships and personal development, personal management, and planning for the future. Emphasis is on the importance of the family, effective communications skills, management skills, how to get along with others, decision making, acceptance of responsibility, and child care practices that promote positive self-image, nutrition, wellness, personal appearance, managing multiple roles, and career options.

 

TAG

This elective course is designed to meet the needs of identified talented and gifted students. Interdisciplinary in nature, this course enhances the four foundation (core) curriculum subjects by adding depth, complexity, and pacing. It is a year long elective and can not be dropped once the student is accepted. Click here for more information.

TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION - DRAFTING

Students explore two types of Drafting; Mechanical and Architectural. The first semester the students will learn basic drafting techniques and tools as well as learn how to draw geometric shapes in 3-D and perspective drawings. The second semester students learn basic Architectural Design. Students design and build a model of their own home design.


CAREER INVESTIGATIONS

This is an 8th grade course that offers a study of the fifteen broad occupational clusters and allows students to evaluate their interests and aptitudes, to become informed about societal and economic factors that influence occupational choice and to learn about various educational programs and courses leading to preparation for a career field.

Students are involved in Hands-On Activities, Fact and Idea Review activities, Career Application Activities, Reinforcing Career Skills, and written and oral reports. They are shown videos relevant to the course, and they have the privilege of having Junior Achievement come into the classroom and tell about how they reached their goals. The students will learn how to locate information in the Occupational Outlook Handbook, the newspaper, on the internet and by using other resources located in the Career Investigation classroom and school library.

COMPUTER LITERACY

This course emphasizes major areas of computer use including hardware components, appropriate use of application software, careers in computers, ethics, awareness, and computer history.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

This course provides each student with the oppportunity for physical fitness assessment, growth and maintenance. Addressing both leisure and lifetime activities, skills are developed for individual, dual and team sports.

READING MASTERY

This course provides opportunities for students scoring below the 40th percentile on the reading section of the district's Norm Referenced Standardized Tests to develop vocabulary, thinking, comprehension, and study skills. Sheltered Language Arts students are eligible for these courses.

SYNERGISTICS LAB

Synergistics Lab is required of all 7th graders. In the lab, students explore various skills through modules and hands-on activities. Visit Synergistics Lab to find out more.
