Ben Milam was born in Kentucky on Oct. 20, 1788. He fought in the War of 1812 against Britain before coming to Texas to pursue trade and business opportunities. In 1835, after General Santa Anna abolished the Constitution of 1824, Milam, who had attained the status of a Mexican empresario, shifted his allegiance to the Texan side. He led 300 Texan soldiers into San Antonio on December 4, 1835, where he died on December 7, fighting for Texas freedom. Milam is best known for leading the Siege of Bexar during the war for independence from Mexico.
