Dr. Julian T. Saldivar has been recognized by many as the first Mexican American physician in Dallas. A native of San Antonio, TX, he studied at The University of Texas at Austin and received his medical degree in 1935 from Baylor Medical School in Dallas.

In 1936, Saldivar served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp and the following year went into private practice. After being recalled to military duty, he was shipped to the Philippines Islands in 1941. In April of that year, Saldivar was taken prisioner by the Japanese army and was one of the thousands of men forced to participate in the infamous Bataan Death March. He was held capative for 40 months. During that time, his humanitarian deeds earned him the name"Angel of Mercy". He later was released and received two Presediental Citations and awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal.
