William Henry Gaston, an Alabama native, was born in 1840 and came to Texas in 1849. After finding success as a cotton farmer, Gaston moved to Dallas where he expanded into real estate, merchandising, and banking. He became one of Dallas's first millionaires. Two of his banks eventually became the First National Bank of Dallas and Republic National Bank. In 1886, he donated 80 acres for the State Fair of Texas grounds. He died in 1927. A major Dallas avenue is named after him.
