Major Awards and Honors

Dan D. Rogers recieved a $30,000 grant from the Beaumont Foundation to use in technology equipment to enrich the curriculum of the school community.

Daniel Dixon Rogers, banker and philanthropist, was born in Temple, Texas, on Aug. 28, 1888. He graduated from Temple High School in 1905 and received his degree from Texas Christian University in 1909. He married Lucile Wolford in 1911. They had one daughter, Dorothy.

In 1925 he became affiliated with the Mercantile National Bank, where he eventually became senior vice president of oil loans. He retained his influential post until 1949 when he joined the National City Bank of Texas as chairman of the board of directors. In addition to his considerable business success, Rogers maintained an interest in a variety of activities, and he left an indelible imprint on many aspects of community life. He was an avid supporter of athletic programs, and starting in 1925 presented the Rogers Trophy each year to the most outstanding player of the TCU football team. However, one of his principal claims to fame is his sponsorship of the annual Cotton Bowl event. He became the president of the athletic association that directed it and became know as "Mr. Cotton Bowl." Another activity which was close to his heart was his work for East Dallas Christian Church, where he was an elder. Rogers led the famous Slaytor Bible Class in group singing. In fact, this was what he was doing when he suffered a heart attack and died on Oct. 16, 1952, in the church he loved so well. A complete list of his affiliations is extensive and indicative of the variety of his interests and of his leadership qualities. In 1955, the Dallas Independent School District opened the doors of Dan D. Rogers Elementary School. It is fitting this school bears his name to help perpetuate the memory of a man who lived so noble and so rich a life.
