Alex Sanger was a civic leader in Dallas and was responsible in whole or in part for many Dallas institutions. He helped to organize the first synagogue in Dallas and served as a city alderman. He also played a key role in convincing the Texas and Pacific Railway to build their line through Dallas, and he spearheaded a bond issue to finance the construction. He was one of the first residents to make a major donation to the Dallas Public Library and served as one of the directors for several years. He helped organize The State Fair of Texas. He served as the director of the state fair from its inception in 1886 until his death in 1925.

In 1910, he provided night school for his employees who had not finished high school at the expense of his store. Sanger Brothers Department Store was the premier retailer in North Texas for many years.
