George Washington Truett was born in North Carolina in 1867. While growing up, his ambition was to become a lawyer, but instead he was ordained as a minister in 1890.

In 1891, Truett was hired by Baylor University in Waco, Texas, to serve as its financial secretary. Enterprising and energetic, Truett saved the university from bankruptcy by raising $92,000 in less than two years and completely wiping out the school's indebtedness.

Truett enrolled as a freshman at Baylor in 1893. While in school, Truett served as student-pastor of East Waco Baptist Church. After his graduation in 1897, he began his ministry at First Baptist Church in Dallas, where he served as pastor for 47 years. He was offered the presidency of Baylor University, but declined to remain with his church in Dallas.

While serving at First Baptist Church, Truett also served as president of the Southern Baptist Convention at Louisville, Ky., from 1927 to 1929. He was elected as president of the Baptist World Alliance at Berlin in 1934 and served through 1939. When the United States entered World War I, he was appointed by President Woodrow Wilson for a six-month tour to preach to the Allied Forces in Europe.

Truett died on July 7, 1944, in Dallas.
