Hours/Bell schedule: Middle College classes meet every day between 11:50 a.m. and 5 p.m. Students schedule their college classes in the mornings. Middle College classes are organized so that students complete a semester's content in nine weeks.

Programs and Activities

Special programs:
OUR STUDENTS GO TO COLLEGE: In 2008-2009, over 90% of Middle College students took a total of 655 college classes. Six students received their Associate's Degree before they graduated from high school. Students and faculty participate regularly in programs of the Middle College National Consortium, which recently has been held in Seattle, New York City, and San Francisco.

After-school programs:
Tutoring and college opportunities are scheduled before school, on Saturdays, and during the summer.

Extracurricular activities:
Ambassadors (School leaders involved in Community Sevice), TAFE--Future Educators, LULAC-League of United Latin American Citizens, Movie Club, Sports Club, Step Team, MCHS Latin and Hip Hop Dancers, Photography, National Honor Society

Parent Involvement

Parents are encouraged to participate in PTSA and Parent/Student/Teacher conferences. Site Based Decision Making (SBDM) committee members meet monthly.

Major Awards and Honors

In May 2009, a Middle College student was recognized as El Centro's outstanding Physics student when she received her Associate's Degree. 2008-09 Texas Education Agency Exemplary School, receiving 9 Gold Performance Acknowledgments from the Texas Education Agency. 2009 graduates earned an average of 28 hours of college credit. Six students received Associate's Degrees from El Centro College before they finished high school. In 2005, Middle College High School received a major grant from the Texas Education Agency to develop one of the first early college programs in Texas. Middle College High School has been selected by the Middle College National Consortium to host national staff development programs for Middle College faculty and staff and has hosted the Middle College National Consortium Student Conference.


Middle College opened in September 1988 with the goal of providing students who have been traditionally underserved by higher education or who might not reach their full potential at a large comprehensive high school with the opportunity to complete as much as two years of college credit through dual credit and concurrent credit classes.
