The school was named in honor of John William Carpenter who was a respected businessman,community leader, and advocate for the Dallas Historical Society and the Texas State Historical Association.

The John W. Carpenter Preschool opened in August 1962. That preschool is now the prekindergarten-through-sixth grade elementary school.
