Programs and Activities

Special programs:
Umphrey Lee Elementary School provides a broad range of special programs and activities for students, teachers, and the community. These programs and activities help to enhance education, community involvement, staff development, as well as prepare students to become productive and responsible citizens. These programs and activities are offered at Umphrey Lee Elementary School: Reading 1st, Earning by Learning, Student Council, Boys Town, Social Skills, Science Fair

After-school programs:
After-school and extended day programs are offered at Umphrey Lee to help with many areas of assessment as well as give students a chance to express their creativity and extend their learning and enrichment after school hours. These programs include: 21st Century Grant School, Grass Enforcers, Delta Academy, Computer Classes, Spring Saturday Tutoring

Extracurricular activities:

Parent Involvement

Opportunities also are available to parents and the community. Such involvement and activities help to create and promote the positive image of Umphrey Lee and include: PTA Meetings, Early Literacy, ARK (Adults Relating to Kids), Volunteer Training, Counseling Services, Grand Parents, Parent Bulletin Board Parent Technology Training

Major Awards and Honors

Students who exemplify continuous improvement in all areas of character receive a character award. Students with perfect attendance receive certificates from the following sponsors: Baskin Robbins, Popeye's Chicken, McDonald's


Umphrey Lee, who served as chancellor of Southern Methodist University, was born in Oakland City, Indiana, March 23, 1893. Dr. Lee died June 23, 1958. Before his death he contributed not only to the community and the state, but also to the world at large. In 1909 he moved to Brownstown, and in 1923 he began his pastorate at Highland Park Methodist Church, where he continued until he became the dean of instruction for The School of Religion at Vanderbilt University.

He also taught homiletics in the Southern Methodist Perkins School of Theology (formerly known as Southern Methodist School of Theology). In 1938 Dr. Lee was elected president of Southern Methodist University and assumed duties as the University's fourth president in March, 1939. Under his direction, SMU made notable advancements in both academic and material wealth.
