María de Jesús Carreón Moreno received her teaching credentials at age 17 from the state school in Guanajato, Mexico. In 1917, she moved to the United States and taught school in different cities before marrying and settling in Dallas in 1928. Working with the Mission Board of the Dallas Methodist District, Moreno established the first kindergarten for Mexican Americans in Dallas. In addition to her work as an educator, she was responsible for bringing many social services to the Little Mexico area. Moreno was affectionately called "la Madre of Floyd Street," a name that reflected her concern for the children of the area. She devoted most of her life to educating parents about the importance of vaccinating children to protect them from smallpox and typhoid. In 1956, the Exchange Club selected Moreno to be the first person listed in its Book of Golden Deeds. Although she appreciated the honoer, she felt uncomfortable being in the spot light and insisted that recognition be given not to her, but to fellow Hispanics.

María de Jesús Carreón Moreno recibíó su título de maestra a la edad de 17 años de la Escuela Normal de Guanajuato, Mexico. En 1917 se mudó a los Estados Unidos donde enseñó en varias cuidades antes de casarse y establecerse en Dallas en 1928. Estableció el primer jardín infantil para niños mexicoamericanos en Dallas mientras trabajaba con la Misión Metodista de Dallas. Además de trabajar como maestra se le reconoce el haber traído arios servicios sociales al área de Little Mexico. Como reconocimiento de su preocupación por los niños del área le fue otorgado cariñosamente el nombre de Madre de la calle Floyd. Ella dedicó gran parte de su vida a educar a los padres sobre la importancia de vacunar a sus hijos contra la tifoidea y la viruela. En 1956, fue la primera persona incluída en el Libro de Buenas Obras del grupo Exchange Club. Aunque el honor la conmovió, no le gustaba ser el centro de atención y pidió compartirlo con los demás hispanos.
