William Hardin Adamson was born in Collinsville, Texas, in 1864. He attended Sam Houston Normal College then began his teaching career in Cooke County. He was Superintendent of Schools in Decatur for seven years.

In 1901, he moved to Oak Cliff, where he was named superintendent of the Oak Cliff School District. That school district later was annexed by the Dallas school district. When Oak Cliff High was constructed, he was named principal. Adamson served at Oak Cliff High until 1934. On May 26,1935, he passed away at 71 years of age. One week later, a proclamation by the Dallas public school system stated that Oak Cliff High would become W. H. Adamson High School.
