Thomas Alva Edison, Inventor

Thomas A. Edison, one of the most productive inventors in American history, held patents for more than 1,000 inventions, including the phonograph and the motion picture projector. Thomas Edison has often been called the greatest inventor who ever lived was born in Milan, Ohio, on Feb. 11, 1847. His father, Samuel Edison, was a shingle maker. His mother, Nancy Elliott Edison, was a school teacher. In his early teens, Edison was newboy, editor and publisher of The Herald. His success was due in part to his work habits. Thomas Edison used the dictating machine, one of his hundreds of inventions, in answering letters. The kinetograph, invented by Edison in 1891, was an important step in the development of motion pictures. On Oct. 21, 1879, Edison introduced the modern age of light.
