Our school was named after Gabriel Penn Allen, a prominent Dallas attorney in the 1930s and 1940s. He was born in Terrell, Texas, and later moved to Dallas, where he attended Dal High (Crozier Tech). He graduated from The University of Texas with a degree in law. Mr. Allen served as a Captain in the field artillery in World War I. Gabe Allen's service to the Dallas ISD began in 1934, when he was appointed to serve on the DISD School Board. He was re-elected, and served on the board for 12 years. During that time, he served as the Finance Chairman, helped shape the DISD curriculum for vocational education, was instrumental in planning the construction of what later became P.C. Cobb Stadium and Field House, and aided in having the board pass a $2 million bond issue for the construction of new schools. When DISD decided to hire its own attorney, Allen was appointed to the post and served in that capacity until his death in 1949.
