E. B. Comstock Middle School was named for Ernest Bernard Comstock, a Dallas educator who was born in Riga, Mass., on March 24, 1879. He was reared on a dairy and stock farm in Sylvania, Ohio, and was educated in the Ohio public schools. In 1905, he graduated from Oberlin College and became principal of Paulding High School in Paulding, Ohio. In 1914, Comstock obtained a teaching job in the Dallas Independent School District, where he worked at Bryan High School (Old Crozier Tech, now the Business Magnet) and Forest Avenue High School (now James Madison High School). He served as principal of J.W. Fannin Elementary School and North Dallas High School and became district superintendent of high schools. Comstock retired in 1949. During his long tenure in Dallas, he successfully encouraged hundreds of students to finish school and achieve success. He was a just man, but he was no coddler of recklessness in youth. Students learned to respect him and lived to thank him for his strict discipline.
