Parent Involvement

Parent involvement is vital to student success and is a priority at L.P. Cowart. Teachers and staff must aggressively seek to involve parents of all students in the educational process. Cowart Elementary is named for a longtime Dallas educator, Leila P. Cowart. Miss Cowart served not only as a teacher but also as principal of several Dallas schools. She began her career in Dallas in 1888 and continued until 1923. During this time she was the administrator at three Dallas schools and a pioneer in the implementation of curriculum in the district. When it was built, Cowart Elementary School was named for her, and a prized possession of the school is the book of Shakespeare's plays, now in the school library, that Miss Cowart used in her teaching. It was given to the school by a friend who felt it should be housed in the school building bearing Miss Cowart's name.
