John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States, was born on July 11, 1767, in Braintree (now Quincy), Mass. He was the son of John Adams, the second president of the United States. John Quincy Adams was a strong opponent of slavery and led the fight that forced Congress to receive antislavery petitions. His interest and support of the arts and sciences helped in the establishment of the Smithsonian Institute. Adams died of a stroke in 1848.
