Annie Webb Blanton (1870-1945) was from a family of early pioneers. A prominent educator in the State of Texas, she started teaching at only 17 years of age. Her career spanned 53 years and included teaching in Pine Spring and Austin, Texas. She was elected to the Board of the North Texas State Normal College, which is now Texas A&M University-Commerce. Blanton was a major promoter for women’s' rights and founded the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, which now has chapters in every state of the union. The organization's motto is "Cooperation for the good of all." Blanton was the first woman elected as president of the Texas State Teacher's Association and served as vice president of the National Education Association for three terms.
