Annie Webb Blanton (1870-1945) was an educator, suffragist, and the first woman elected to statewide office in Texas. She taught at the elementary, secondary and college levels during her 53 years in education. In 1916, Annie Webb Blanton was the elected president of the Texas State Teachers Association. She was the first woman to hold this position. In 1918, at the request of the governor of Texas, she ran for and was elected as the State Superintendent of Public Education. As State Superintendent, Blanton established a system of free textbooks, revised teacher certification laws and raised teachers' salaries. Always a promoter for women’s rights and the education profession, she founded the Delta Kappa Gamma Society in 1929. This honorary society for women educators now has an international membership of over 160,000.
