Programs and Activities

Special programs:
Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Dallas Reading 1st, Basketball, Science Club, Math Club

After-school programs:
Dallas Parks and Recreation After School Program—Students participate in various life skills activities and tutoring from 3:00—6:00, Monday through Friday. Snacks are provided.

Extracurricular activities:
Yearbook-Students work with the Instrctional Technologist and GT Teacher toprovide an in-house publication of the years’ activities. Science Club-Students participate weekly in inquiry-based, hands-on enrichment activites. Each Wednesday during the spring semester students have the opportunity to participate in social development activities such as dance, gardening, reading club, scrapbooking, sewing, drama and many other activities.

Parent Involvement

Through our SBDM, PTA and Volunteer Program, parents can be actively involved in helping to ensure that all students receive a quality education.

Major Awards and Honors

John W. Runyon has received numerous awards such as the DISD Effective School Awards, Recognition from the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers, and Recognition for Maintaining an Accident Free Facility. Also, our students have received awards for DISD Science Fairs, Math Olympiad, and Writing Contests.


John W. Runyon Elementary School was built in 1968 and was named for Mr. John Wesley Runyon. John W. Runyon worked for what is now the Dallas Time Herald. He started as a clerk and bill collector. He rose to advertising manager, editor, president of KRLD, president of the Times Herald and chairman of the board. He was also one of the chief officers of the Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children. He was also elected to serve on the board of directors of The Associated Press by his fellow publishers.
