Urban Park Elementary School was built in 1930 as the administration building for the North Texas Branch of San Antonio's Peacock Military Academy. It was the only military school and the only junior college in Dallas. A state-of-the-art facility, it boasted a dial telephone system which needed no operator. In 1938, the Pleasant Mound I.S.D., renamed the school Urban Park. In 1986, Urban Park Elementary became a historical landmark for the Dallas community. Visitors can still see a beautiful etched Peacock in the stone over the front entrance of the school, which once signified the mascot for the Peacock Military Boys Academy.
