Antonio Maceo Smith was born in Texarkana, Texas, on April 16,1903, to Howell and Winnie Smith. He attended public schools in Texarkana and earned a Bachelor of Arts at Fisk University in 1924, a Master of Business Administration at New York University in 1928, and pursued additional graduate studies in economics and business law at Columbia University. Early in his career, he owned an advertising agency in New York and real estate company in Texarkana. Smith moved to Dallas in 1932 and taught business administration in the Dallas Independent School District. He also served as publisher of The Dallas Express, a weekly newspaper. In 1933, Smith became the first executive secretary of the Dallas Negro Chamber of Commerce. He was appointed deputy director of the Hall of Negro Life at the Texas Centennial Exposition in 1936. In 1937, he became an administrative aide with the Federal Housing Administration. In 1939, Smith was appointed regional relations advisor for the United States Housing Authority in Region VI. Often referred to as Mr. Civil Rights or Mr. Organization of Texas, Smith was a life-long activist in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in Texas. He was a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and a devoted member of New Hope Baptist Church. He passed away on Dec. 19, 1977. In 1985, A. Maceo Smith High School was named in honor of Smith's contributions to the city of Dallas and civil rights efforts for all African Americans.
