The Sarah Zumwalt Middle School, formerly named Sarah Zumwalt Junior High School, was named for Sarah Ross Zumwalt, or W.P. Zumwalt. She was a friend of students, teachers, school administrators, and the school board.

Zumwalt's personal motto was "to plan for more than you can do - then do it." Keys to Zumwalt's thinking, friends said, were: Consider the other person's viewpoint, then cooperate; to be happy be busy.
