Paul Laurence Dunbar was born in Ohio in 1872 to parents who had been slaves. As the only African American in his Dayton High School class, he was selected as editor of the school newspaper and was chosen to write the song for graduation. His first poem was published when he was sixteen. Prior to his death at the age of 34, Dunbar was acclaimed as the poet laureate of the African American race. His poetry has remained popular and highly praised for almost a century.
